Rosh Hashanah Tish - this Friday

For transgressions between one person and another, Yom Kippur does not procure atonement.

This statement, taken from the Talmud, reminds us that one day, even Yom Kippur, can not ‘magically’ heal our relationships and erase what we’ve done to each other. The work of teshuvah during this season includes the very physical and concrete act of requesting forgiveness from each other.

Who are we supposed to seek forgiveness from? For what acts must we seek forgiveness? How are we supposed to request forgiveness? What if the other person/people don’t forgive us?

These questions and more will be explored during our Tish on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, Friday, September 30 at 10:30am in the VCS lunchroom. We will be looking at a variety of traditional texts as well as some Calvin and Hobbes cartoons!

Lunch will be served, and then we will head over to Pier 45 for Tashlich (the traditional ceremony of throwing bread into the river).

I look forward to seeing you there.

Shanah Tovah U’metukah,

Rabbi Darby J. Leigh

Please Join Us On 9.11.11

Dear all our New Shul friends -

After last night's lovely Kabbalat Shabbat we were talking about how 10 years ago, our synagogue sustained us through those difficult times. To commemorate all we have lived through and celebrate who we are as a community, we hope you will join us this Sunday 9.11.11 from 2-4pm. We will be meeting at the waters end of the Christopher Street Pier. Please share a story of your experience if you like, and bring a flower. Join us when you can, but we hope to all be together at 3pm to toss our flowers into the Hudson and have a moment of reflection.

Shabbat Shalom,

Marty Umans, Pam Levine, Amie Gross

Member Judy Levine sent us this link to the poem: When the Towers Fell by Galway Kinnell.

Follow the Other Hand at the Rebbe's Table This Month

Hey New Shul,

Your favorite brunch spot is back with a bang!

Join at The Rebbe's Table, an event dedicated to the belief that there should be more to Sunday Brunch than Bagels and Lox.

Our guest this month is The New Shul's very own businessman, speaker, and magician Andy Cohen. Join Andy and Rabbi Dan Ain for a discussion that explores the role of assumption in influencing both our business and personal lives as well as our religious viewpoints. Andy will be performing magic, as well as teaching a slight of hand illusion, to help us examine the
effects of treating our assumptions as truths rather than as beliefs.

Check out the flier above for more details!
