Zoya's Delicious Latkes: Do Try This At Home

Every year, we at The New Shul wait for our Pot Mazel/Luck Shavuot event because we know longtime member Zoya Romm will bring her homemade latkes. Zoya gave us her recipes last night at the event when only three laktes remained.

  • 2 apples grated
  • 1/4 pound cottage cheese through a net colander
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons (or two) flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Fry on a skillet with oil. Use fork to flatten. Flip after a few minutes.

As Zoya, pictured above says, "No, that's it." So go cook - try it, you'll like it!

Donate a Book or Two this Saturday

From teen member: Nia Judelson

Hi Everyone -

Part of the tradition at The New Shul, when becoming a Bat/Bar Mitzvah, is to give back to the community by doing a community service project. I searched and found a project that really suits my passion- a love of reading. For my project, I am doing a book drive in connection with Project Cicero. Project Cicero is a non-profit annual book drive designed to create or supplement school and classroom libraries for children in under-resourced New York City public schools. Since its inception in 2001, Project Cicero has distributed 1.3 million new and gently used books to 7,500 New York City classrooms and libraries, reaching 300,000 students.

For more information: http://www.projectcicero.org/

Please help me by bringing in a new or gently used book for children or young adults (Project Cicero believes and I agree that every child should have the joy of reading an almost new book). I will have a collection bin at The New Shul services this Saturday, May 30th from 10:30-noon, at the service where I will become a Bat Mitzvah.

After I collect the books - which I hope is a lot! - I will deliver them to Project Cicero. In March when they have their annual large book drive, I have committed to spending the weekend there to help sort books and deliver them to those in need.

I hope that you find my project as compelling as I do and I hope that you will help me make it a huge success.

See you Saturday!
Nia

Editor's note: If you are unable to donate a book this weekend and are interested in participating, please give us a call or email us at the office.

Flavorpill recommends you catch Tortoise, plus a world-premiere piece by the Bang on a Can All-Stars, piano virtuoso Ryuichi Sakamoto, and legendary jazz bassist Henry Grimes.

Shavuot - Chicago Style Cheese Cake

Why do we eat dairy on Shavuot?
One explanation is that the Israelites had not yet received the Torah, with its Jewish dietary laws, Kashrut. As the food they had prepared beforehand was not in accordance with these laws, they opted to eat simple dairy meals to honor the holiday. Some say it harks back to King Solomon's portrayal of the Torah as "honey and milk are under your tongue"

Either way - we love this cheese cake, brought to you by one of our favorite mother-daughter teams:

Chicago Style Cheese Cake
-Melanie & Anne Sylvan

Cheese Cake Fulling
2 well-beaten eggs
2 (8-oz) pkgs. soft cream cheese
1 cup sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. almond extract
3 cups sour cream
1 recipe graham nut crust (see next part)
1 can cherry, blueberry or strawberry pie filling

Combine eggs, cream cheese, sugar, salt and extracts. Beat until smooth. Blend in sour cream. Spoon into crust (see next part).

Graham Nut Crust
2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/4 cup chopped nuts
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 stick butter, melted

Mix all ingredients together in mixing bowl. Press mixture on bottom and 2 1/2 inches up the sides of a 9 inch spring form pan. Spoon cheese mixture into uncooked crust, covering the bottom and sides of the spring form pan. DO NOT BAKE CRUST BEFORE ADDING CHEESE FILLING. IT ALL BAKES TOGETHER AT THE SAME TIME! Bake for 35 minutes in 375 degree oven. Leave cake in oven one hour after turning the oven off. Remove cake from oven after the extra hour and let cool at room temperature. After cake has cooled off, spoon one can of fruit pie filling over the top of the cake. Chill in refrigerator until cold. Serves 12-16 people.

Have a great dairy recipe? Share it in our comment section, or better yet, bring it with you for us to try on Thursday at our Shavuot event.

N?tworking Breakfast - June 1st

Funny how there's only a one letter difference between Networking and Not Working. . .

Looking for work? Interested in taking a fresh look at what you have to offer?

At this provocative, hands-on breakfast event, New Shul member and innovation expert Sylvia Stein will show you how to build a "sell sheet" that markets your value to a prospective employer in a much more dynamic (and "feel-good") way than a traditional resumé can. In this session, we will break into groups to brainstorm ideas for each participant, whether trying to market your self or your business. Please bring your completed homework - the Sell Sheet, which we will mail to you after you register - with you to the session.

We'll provide coffee, oj and bagels to help get your creative juices flowing. Please be prompt as time is limited.

To reserve a spot or for more information, please call 212-284-6773.

Moses Didn't Have Technology to Communicate

The actual laws relating to Passover, Sukkot and Shavuot as they're written in the Torah might surprise you - there aren't too many of them. Check out http://www.mechon-mamre.org/ to find out what customs for each holiday come straight from the Torah , and which are implied by the Torah, and which are new traditions of our own.
