Donate a Book or Two this Saturday
From teen member: Nia Judelson
Hi Everyone -
Part of the tradition at The New Shul, when becoming a Bat/Bar Mitzvah, is to give back to the community by doing a community service project. I searched and found a project that really suits my passion- a love of reading. For my project, I am doing a book drive in connection with Project Cicero. Project Cicero is a non-profit annual book drive designed to create or supplement school and classroom libraries for children in under-resourced New York City public schools. Since its inception in 2001, Project Cicero has distributed 1.3 million new and gently used books to 7,500 New York City classrooms and libraries, reaching 300,000 students.

Please help me by bringing in a new or gently used book for children or young adults (Project Cicero believes and I agree that every child should have the joy of reading an almost new book). I will have a collection bin at The New Shul services this Saturday, May 30th from 10:30-noon, at the service where I will become a Bat Mitzvah.
After I collect the books - which I hope is a lot! - I will deliver them to Project Cicero. In March when they have their annual large book drive, I have committed to spending the weekend there to help sort books and deliver them to those in need.

See you Saturday!

Dear Nia,
Thank you for posting this. I am a member of the New Shul, and I teach high school. Because of your posting, I got in touch with Project Cicero and hope to be on their list next March so that I can get some books appropriate for young teenagers. My kids are all English Language Learners and I encourage them to read - but the school can't afford books kids like - we barely get textbooks. So, thank you for letting me know about Cicero.
Kindest regards,
Sophia Zannis
